Denver Nuggets' Will Barton brings basketball to Thai youth

POSTED BY: WILL BARTON in NEWS

The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced Tuesday that Will Barton of the Denver Nuggets will travel to Bangkok to participate in the Jr. NBA presented by Foremost National Training Camp.

Barton will help coach participants from all over the country striving to be named this year's Jr. NBA Thailand All-Stars. The National Training Camp will be held at the New International School of Bangkok (NIST) July 15-16 and at the Future Park Rangsit Mall July 17.

Barton, a 6'6" guard from the University of Memphis, was selected 40th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2012 NBA Draft. Barton joined the Nuggets in 2014 and averaged 14.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last season, finishing fifth in voting for the 2015-16 Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award.

"I'm looking forward to meeting and training with the future basketball stars of Thailand," said Barton. "The Jr. NBA participants have worked very hard for their spots at the National Training Camp, and I can't wait to share my skills and knowledge with all of them."

"On behalf of Foremost, presenting partner of the Jr. NBA program in Thailand for the past three years, we can proudly say that this has been a successful partnership that enhances our Drink.Move.BeStrong initiative by providing a unique opportunity to inspire children to stay fit and healthy through basketball," said FrieslandCampina Thailand Marketing Director Pimjan Vimuktanonda.

"More and more children from schools nationwide participate in the Jr. NBA program every year, and we are thrilled to give these Thai athletes the opportunity to get an up-close and personal experience with an NBA player. In addition to practicing sports in a fun environment, the Jr. NBA Thailand All-Stars will also be given an unforgettable experience when they embark on their overseas experience trip with fellow All-Stars from Southeast Asia later this year."

The National Training Camp is the culmination of the Jr. NBA presented by Foremost, providing the top 40 boys and top 24 girls the opportunity to train with and compete against one another. At the end of the National Training Camp, 10 boys and five girls will be named Jr. NBA Thailand All-Stars and will participate in a unique, overseas NBA experience together with fellow Jr. NBA All-Stars from Southeast Asia later in the year.

As part of last year's overseas NBA experience, the 2015 Jr. NBA All-Stars traveled to China to attend NBA Global Games 2015 in Shenzhen featuring the Charlotte Hornets and L.A. Clippers. While in Shenzhen they met with NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo, played in exhibition basketball games and toured the city. Details of the 2016 NBA experience will be announced at a later date.

According to the South East Asia Nutrition Survey (SEANUTS), three out of every five Thai children drink less than one glass of milk a day; when combined with low levels of physical activity, these children are twice as likely to become obese. Foremost has partnered with the Jr. NBA in Thailand as part of its Drink.Move.BeStrong campaign to encourage an active lifestyle and a healthy diet among Thai children while highlighting milk's role in a child's growth and development, helping build muscle and keeping bones strong.

In addition to Foremost, Spalding will serve as a supporting partner and TrueVisions as the official broadcast partner of the Jr. NBA presented by Foremost. The program is also conducted in association with the Embassy of the United States in Bangkok.
